Hervé Frankopoulos

Hervé Frankopoulos
   Hervé, called Frankopoulos ("son of the Frank"), commanded (ca. 1050) the Normans (q.v.) who served as mercenaries along the eastern frontier. Denied the title of magistros by Michael VI (qq.v.), he rebelled in 1057. Though defeated, he managed to flee to Isaac I (q.v.), to whom he gave support, causing other commanders to do likewise. For this Isaac I made him magistros and stratelates (commander) of the East. Hervé's successors Robert Crespin and Roussel de Bailleul (q.v.) were equally unreliable Norman commanders.
